2024-2025 SEASON FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
When is registration due for the 2024-2025 season?
All registrations – including payment of $50 per player – should be completed on our website by September 30, 2024. You will receive an email confirmation from [email protected] within 24 hours of registration submission. Be sure to check your spam/junk folder if you don’t receive a confirmation email.
When will the season begin?
For 3rd through 6th grade players, the recreation season will begin the week of November 1st and conclude by November 22nd. Players will required to attend a skills assessment session on October 6th and will be notified of their team selection by October 13th.
Please note that the skills assessment is not a tryout. All players who sign up for recreation basketball will be placed on a team. The skills assessment will be utilized to assist in dividing teams.
For those players chosen for a travel team, the travel season will begin in mid-December and last through early March.
All 1st and 2nd grade players will begin practices in early December and conclude by late February.
My child has never played basketball before. Do they have to try-out?
For the recreation season, all players will be placed on a team. However, in order to divide teams to the best of our abilities, we do require that all players in grades 3-6 attend a skills assessment on October 6th. We encourage all students, regardless of their experience level, to come out and learn the game with us.
Does my child have to participate in the recreation league to play on the travel team?
Yes. All travel players will be chosen based on their performance on the recreation team.
Does my child need to attend an Athens school to be eligible?
No. The AWYBA is a fully independent, non-profit organization separate and distinct from the Athens Area School District (“AASD”). Our Bylaws require that an eligible player live within the AASD district boundaries or attend a school within the same. For example, students who attend local private schools or other public school districts outside of Athens – but that live within the AASD district – may register to try out for the 2024-2025 season.
Are the volunteer requirements mandatory?
Yes. The volunteer requirements for travel basketball will involve one to two hours per player between January and March. The requirement could be concession stand assistance, scoreboard and clock keeping, or setting up and closing the gym. It is the family’s responsibility to find an alternative if they are unable to work the given time allotment.
Will there be an informational meeting to discuss the 2024-2025 season?
Yes. We will be at the Lynch-Bustin Gym on September 15th and September 29th from 6:30PM – 8:00PM to answer any questions. You can also reach us at [email protected] or contact Kevin Dougherty at 570-867-1121 with any questions.
During the informational meetings, all eligible 1st through 6th grade players are encouraged to attend an open gym session that will run in the Lynch-Bustin Gym from 6:30PM-7:30PM. An AWYBA Board Member will be on-site to answer any questions throughout the period, and will hold a live Q&A session at the conclusion of the open gym at 7:30PM in the gym.
How do I report an incident/issue with a coach, parent, player, ref, or board member?
If you were part of or witnessed an incident with another individual during a game, practice, or other AWYBA sanctioned event and would like to share your perspective, please complete and submit the Formal Allegations Form on our website. The form may be used for any issues involving other parents, your child’s coach, their teammates, officials, or a member(s) of the AWYBA board of directors.
